Civil Litigation

Civil disputes, from the first letter through negotiation and, where retained, court proceedings.

Civil litigation at Paterson Legal Firm is a plan for a disagreement, not a prediction of who will win. Clients arrive with a letter, an unpaid invoice, a contract the other side now reads differently, or a deadline that is already close.

The first work is to build a timeline and collect the documents: the contract, the correspondence, and the messages that show what each side expected. Dates often matter more than the argument. A notice period or a contractual deadline can decide whether a claim can still be brought.

The firm represents clients in negotiation and, where it is retained to do so, in court proceedings. It tells the client what the record supports, where the record is thin, and what it will take to continue. Settlement is discussed as one option among others, with the cost and the uncertainty stated plainly.

Nothing on this page is a report of past results. Outcomes depend on the facts, the forum, and the law that applies. Sending a consultation request does not make you a client.

Demand letters and responses

Document review

Organizing the papers and the timeline that the dispute will turn on.

How a matter begins

The first conversation is used to understand the facts, the documents, and the timing. The firm then says whether it can assist.

  1. 1

    Describe the matter

Use the consultation form and name this practice area. Do not include highly sensitive facts in the first message.

  2. 2

    Share the papers

If the firm can review the matter, it will ask for the contract, notice, or other documents that control the next step.

  3. 3

    Agree the scope

Representation begins only when the firm agrees to act. Until then, there is no attorney-client relationship.

Most civil disputes begin with a document, a deadline, or a conversation that no longer matches the parties’ expectations.
